Last Sunday marked the Feast of Christ the King and this was the theme within Rosemary's homily within our 10am Parish Eucharist. As usual, much of the material for this came from the readings for the day: Jeremiah 23. 1-6; Colossians 1. 11-20; Luke 23. 33-43. Great Britain has as its Head of State a constitutional monarch. In the past, kings were all powerful. A similar situation applied to Israel and during her history good monarchs came and went and the same applied to the 'baddies'. Prophets had their say and seemingly often to little avail and the time came when the Jews longed for a good king who would demonstrate his power by solving their anxieties. Then came the birth of Jesus when people's concepts of a king were turned upside down. Christ was indeed the Messiah but he was a servant in outlook. "I am the Good Shepherd." This received mixed reactions. Jesus upon Earth was no warrior king in the accepted sense. Yet, Christ was and is our King and we can remain confident and sustained by his promise of the Cross. Nothing can separate us from his presence.
After the service, there was time allocated for the Sidespersons, Fire Marshall and Fire Warden Training.
This has been a busy week during which the Parochial Church Council has had its periodical meeting in the Chapter House and our weekly Eucharist took place on the 27th. On the previous day, St Andrew's School had two services at different times during the day and today, 28th November, Biggleswade has its Christmas Fair and the Big Lights Switch On, all happening between 10am to 12pm. On Saturday, between 10am and 12 noon, Coffee Shop is taking place, also offering Warm Spaces for those 'out in the cold'. Warm Spaces will also be available until further notice on Thursdays, between 10:30am and 11:30am.
This Sunday, 30th November, there will be 10am Parish Eucharist with Sunday School and at 6pm there will be our Service of Light. There will be Advent Night Prayer Time on Monday, 1st, 8th and 15th December at 7pm to 7:30pm.
On 6th December, 10am to 12 noon, there will be an Advent Christmas Wreath Workshop. This will include a 'soup and lunch roll' as well. For this whole event, we would humbly request a £10 minimum donation which will go to church funds. For this, there is a sign-up sheet in the foyer. On 17th December, there will be Carols on the Lawn, starting 6pm.
